Can
Nulex® Be Placed In-Furrow?
There
have been a number of inquiries recently about the safety of applying
Nulex in-furrow at planting time on corn. Nutra-Flo does not encourage or
endorse in-furrow application of any liquid fertilizer products; however,
university trials have shown it can be done safely and is becoming a more
common practice. If you do have customers who want to apply Nulex
in-furrow here are two guidelines to follow:
1) Never apply Nulex by
itself without mixing it into an ammonium polyphosphate buffering
solution, such as 10-34-0. The basic element zinc does not pose a threat
to germination. But, because the chemistry of Nulex is an ammoniated
complex, free ammonia exists which means a very high pH that can reduce
germination.
2) Add no more than 1/2-pint of Nulex per
one- gallon of 10-34-0. Nutra-Flo tests have shown that a maximum
ratio of 1/2-pint Nulex to one- gallon 10-34-0 will provide enough
phosphate to neutralize any free ammonia and maintain pH below 7.0. This
is also a sufficient quantity of Nulex to supply recommended amounts of
zinc for maximum plant production.
Once again, Nutra-Flo does not promote in-furrow
application of liquid fertilizer, but offer the above guidelines for those
who do want to apply Nulex with 10-34-0 in-furrow on corn.
